It all started when I began to realize what I was feeding my dog, yes, my dog. I met this woman who opened me up to the world of B.A.R.F (biologically appropriate raw food) or just a "Raw diet" for dogs. I immediately refused to feed my dog the traditional kibble because I didn't want to harm him with all of the garbage that was in it. I began getting all of this judgment from friends and distant relatives with regards to "why in the world I would feed my dog Raw meat?" and I couldn't understand why they didn't understand it. I continuously told them that I was feeding him what his breed ate thousands of years ago in the wild that that it was far better for him than anything else you could buy commercially. Then finally it clicked with me, why am I fearful of the chemicals and preservatives and lack of nutrition in my dogs food but not my own? Grant it, I was already a vegan at the time but still, I ate a lot of imitation products. I would eat things that tried to mimic the taste of meat like tofurkey or tofu dogs, and then I got it - "how many chemicals must be in this food for this company to try to make this "non-meat" product something that tastes similar to meat?" So I stopped trying to eat a "traditional" diet consisting of a plate with 1/2 protein, 1/4 starch, and 1/4 vegetables and started opening my eyes to the world of raw foods. Now I have smoothies and juices for breakfast made from fresh fruits and veggies and usually for lunch too! Then I have a big meal of raw veggies for my dinner. I never allow myself to wander to other foods because I always plan and know what my next meal will be. For me, raw foods has been an awakening - for my body, mind, soul and spirit.
